Donald Trump: A Look into the Political Enigma

Let’s be honest, we all know who Donald Trump is. At least we have heard of him. Popping into the cultural spotlight after his successful run as the 45th President of the United States of America from 2016 to 2020 and now once again the 47th President (2025–Present), it can be confidently assumed that Donald J. Trump is the centre of the cultural and political zeitgeist and has been for a while.

And everyone knows it. But what about the man behind the political machine? Who was Donald Trump before he became the front-running candidate for the Republican Party? Let’s take a deep dive and see, shall we?

Early Life and Education

Donald John Trump was born on June 14, 1946, to Fred and Mary Trump in Queens, New York City. The Trumps were, by then, an already wealthy real estate family. He first attended the private Kew-Forest School at his father’s insistence. Later, his parents enrolled him at the New York Military Academy, a strict boarding school where he quickly found his footing.

There, he excelled both academically and socially, embracing a culture that emphasized discipline, competition, and the drive to win—especially through sports. After graduating high school in 1964, Trump proceeded to study at Fordham University in the Bronx and the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania, one of America’s top business schools. He graduated from Wharton in 1968 with a bachelor’s degree in economics.

Career

Trump began his professional career working in his father’s real estate firm, Elizabeth Trump & Son, which mainly focused on affordable housing for the middle class. In 1971, after taking control, he renamed it The Trump Organization and shifted the firm’s focus into high-profile projects in Manhattan like Trump Tower and the Grand Hyatt Hotel.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Trump expanded into ventures like resorts, casinos, golf courses, and global real estate. Always a socialite, Trump also became a prominent media figure, hosting The Apprentice from 2004 to 2015 (where he popularised his signature “You’re fired” catchphrase) and owning beauty pageants such as Miss Universe. His career is a mixture of bold marketing and branding, but also several bankruptcies, a demonstration of both flamboyance and controversy.

Net Worth

According to estimates by Forbes, Donald Trump’s net worth is valued at approximately $6.5 billion as of 2026, with similar assessments reported by Bloomberg. Much of it is a result of real estate holdings (hotels, commercial properties, etc.) and licensing of the Trump brand.

In recent years, Trump’s ventures into cryptocurrencies and various branded products such as NFTs, watches, and books have further added to his wealth. Legacy inheritance and pre-existing family assets also play a significant role overall in building his fortune.

Family

Donald Trump has always had a large and very high-profile family life. Married three times, to Ivana Trump (with whom he had Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump, and Eric Trump), then to Marla Maples (with whom he had Tiffany Trump), and currently to Melania Trump (with whom he had Barron Trump), his family also extends to his siblings, his sister Maryanne Trump, a former federal judge, and his late brother Fred Trump Jr. Family members are central both in his business—Trump’s sons Donald Jr. and Eric run The Trump Organization—and his political sphere, where he is helped by Ivanka. His children’s careers vary from real estate and politics to fashion and cryptocurrency.

Politics

Trump’s political career began with the 2016 presidential campaign, where he defeated the Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and became the 45th president of the United States. As president, he built the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, which centred on immigration restriction, trade protectionism, and deregulation.

His first term was marked by intense controversy, two impeachments, and a historic protest that resulted in the attack on the U.S. Capitol on 6th January. After losing to the Democratic candidate Joe Biden in 2020, Trump returned to power in 2025 as the 47th president and is proceeding to continue his ‘America First’ agenda.
