Armed Man Arrested Near US Capitol on Tuesday after authorities said an 18-year-old suspect ran toward the building carrying a shotgun, triggering a rapid police response and renewed discussions about domestic security and threats against federal institutions.
According to the United States Capitol Police, the incident occurred around noon when officers observed the suspect approaching the Capitol’s west front while carrying a loaded shotgun. Authorities said the individual complied with commands to drop the weapon and get on the ground. No shots were fired, and no injuries were reported.
Suspect Identified and Taken Into Custody
Police identified the suspect as 18-year-old Carter Camacho of Georgia. Investigators said he arrived in Washington, D.C., in a Mercedes SUV and parked near the United States Botanic Garden before proceeding toward the Capitol grounds.
At a press briefing, Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan stated that the suspect was wearing a tactical vest and gloves and had additional ammunition. A helmet and gas mask were also recovered from the vehicle. Authorities said there is currently no evidence suggesting a broader plot or involvement of additional individuals.
Officials are reviewing surveillance footage and have asked members of the public to provide any additional video or information that may assist in the investigation.
