Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic, the NBA’s scoring leader this season, left Thursday night’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers after suffering soreness in his left leg and did not return, the team announced following the matchup at Crypto.com Arena. The injury occurred late in the second quarter, and the Lakers subsequently ruled him out for the remainder of the contest as they continue to assess his condition.

Dončić, 26, had been playing 16 minutes against the 76ers when he appeared to experience discomfort in his left leg. He limped back toward the locker room with approximately three minutes remaining in the first half and was officially ruled out for the night due to soreness, according to team and league reports.

“It’s leg soreness. We’ll have more information after further evaluation,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said in his postgame comments, keeping the update limited while emphasizing that the team would take a cautious approach.

The injury came on a difficult night for the Lakers, who were returning home after an eight-game road trip. Despite Dončić’s absence after halftime, Los Angeles rallied behind standout performances by Austin Reaves and LeBron James, prevailing against the 76ers 119–115. Reaves scored 35 points, while James added 17 points with 10 assists.

Who Is Luka Doncic ?

Dončić is among the NBA’s premier offensive talents and has been central to the Lakers’ success this season. The Slovenian guard joined the Lakers in a high-profile trade ahead of the 2025–26 season and quickly established himself as a primary scoring and playmaking force. He leads the league in points per game, averaging 33.4 through 41 games, while also ranking among the top players in assists.

Prior to his Lakers tenure, Dončić spent the first seven seasons of his NBA career with the Dallas Mavericks, where he earned multiple All-NBA honors and playoff appearances, cementing his reputation as one of the league’s brightest stars.

Details of the Injury Incident

The injury took place late in the second quarter, when Dončić appeared to feel discomfort after a standard transition play. He continued briefly before signaling to the Lakers’ bench and departing. He recorded 10 points, four rebounds and two assists before exiting the floor, shooting three-for-10 from the field and missing all four three-point attempts.

The Lakers have not yet provided an official diagnosis beyond “leg soreness” or disclosed a timeline for his return to the lineup. Dončić has missed games earlier in the season due to minor injuries but has otherwise played a significant portion of the Lakers’ schedule.

According to reports, further imaging — including MRI scans — is expected to take place in the coming days as the team seeks to better understand the nature of the soreness. Head coach Redick emphasized that the team would avoid premature conclusions until full medical evaluation has occurred.

Impact on the Lakers team due to Luka Doncic Leg Injury

Dončić’s status carries particular weight for the Lakers as they strive to maintain a competitive position in the Western Conference. At the time of Thursday’s game, the Lakers were sitting near the playoff cutoff, with each win and loss carrying significant implications for seeding and potential first-round matchups.

Losing a player of Dončić’s caliber, even on a short-term basis, creates immediate challenges for the Lakers’ offense and rotation. The team’s ability to adapt when he is unavailable will be tested, as role players must shoulder additional scoring and playmaking responsibilities.

Lakers officials noted that guard Austin Reaves’ strong performance Thursday demonstrated the depth of the roster and the capacity of complementary players to step up in Dončić’s absence. Reaves’ explosive scoring was a primary driver in the team’s comeback over the 76ers.

What’s Next?

The Lakers’ medical staff is expected to monitor Dončić closely in the coming days. There is no confirmed timeline for his return to action, and the team has indicated that they will withhold further updates until evaluations are complete. Any timetable will likely depend on imaging results and Dončić’s response to rest and treatment.

Thursday’s game occurred just days before the NBA All-Star break, a scheduled pause in the league calendar that could offer additional recovery time. While the Lakers have not explicitly tied his absence to the upcoming break, having that window could prove beneficial for his evaluation process.

For now, the Lakers remain hopeful that the injury is manageable and that Dončić’s absence will be limited, prioritizing his long-term health and availability as the season progresses.
