Speaking after talks with U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Zelenskyy said the meetings would take place in Abu Dhabi and described them as a positive step forward. He noted that key conditions related to Ukraine’s security guarantees have now been outlined and that a separate agreement focused on post-war economic recovery is close to being finalized.
According to Zelenskyy, the emerging framework reflects Ukraine’s priorities and counters earlier U.S. proposals that Kyiv viewed as more favorable to Moscow. “The documents are much stronger now,” he said, calling his meeting with Trump “productive and substantive.”
US Pushes Diplomatic Momentum
Russia has not yet issued an official response regarding the proposed trilateral discussions.
President Trump described his conversation with Zelenskyy as “good” and said efforts to end the conflict initiated by Russia remain ongoing. He reiterated that his message to Russian President Vladimir Putin is clear: the war must end.
U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff added to the cautious optimism, saying negotiations have narrowed to what he described as a single unresolved issue. Speaking at Davos, Witkoff said many aspects of that issue have already been discussed, suggesting a resolution is possible if all sides are willing. “If both parties want to solve it, we will solve it,” he said.
Following the Davos meetings, Witkoff—along with Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law—traveled to Moscow for further discussions with President Vladimir Putin, underlining Washington’s active diplomatic engagement on multiple fronts.
Key Issues Still Unresolved
While details of the remaining sticking point remain unclear, Zelenskyy has previously indicated that the core disputes include the future of Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories, Moscow’s claims over areas still controlled by Kyiv, and control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is currently under Russian occupation.
Zelenskyy Calls for Accountability
Addressing global leaders at the forum, Zelenskyy renewed calls for international accountability, criticizing Europe for failing to use frozen Russian assets to help defend Ukraine. He argued that allowing Putin access to frozen funds while the war continues sends the wrong message.
“This is the fourth year of the largest war in Europe since World War II,” Zelenskyy said, adding that the man who started it remains free.
NATO Warns Against Cutting Support
Trump has repeatedly stated that both Putin and Zelenskyy are close to reaching a deal, warning that failure to do so would be a serious mistake for both sides. Despite months of behind-the-scenes diplomacy involving Russia, Ukraine, the United States, and European leaders, no final agreement has yet been reached.
